About the position
At NMBU Faculty of Veterinary Medicine – Department of Paraclinical Sciences, Subject Group for Toxicology, there is a vacancy for a research fellow in environmental and food toxicology. This is a fixed-term position with a duration of 3 years.
The research work will be linked to the “Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals” (PARC) research project which aims to develop next-generation chemical risk assessment to protect human health and the environment. It supports the EU’s chemicals strategy for sustainability and the European Green Deal’s “Zero pollution” ambition with new data, knowledge, methods and tools, expertise, and networks.
The PhD candidate will work on evaluating the potential of selected chemicals within PARC to induce toxic and neurotoxic effects. This will be carried out by characterizing toxicity and identifying modes of action (MOA) using the zebrafish model and human and fish cell lines whereby the project will contribute to the development of “Adverse Outcome Pathways” (AOPs).

Main tasks
- Participate in development of study design for sample collection of representative material to identify and characterize the occurrence of toxic and neurotoxic effects.
- Perform biological and molecular biological analyses.
- Statistical process and interpret results.
- Publish results in international journals and in international PARC meetings.
The successful candidate is expected to enter a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree during the first months of the appointment, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD scholarship period.
Competence
The successful applicant must meet the conditions defined for admission to a PhD programme at NMBU. The applicant must have an academically relevant education corresponding to a five-year master’s degree or a cand.med.vet. degree, with a learning outcome corresponding to the descriptions in the Norwegian Qualification Framework, second cycle. The applicant must have a documented strong academic background from previous studies and be able to document proficiency in both written and oral English. The applicant must document expertise and interest in the research subject.
Academic qualifications
Required qualifications are:
- Relevant master’s degree or veterinary education (DVM)/cand.med.vet.
Desired qualifications are:
- experience with the use of animal models
- experience with biological and chemical preparation and analyses
- experience with the use of statistics and the statistics program R
- competence in bioinformatics and/or biotechnology
- good language skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language
Personal qualifications
You need to have:
- strong motivation and interest in research.
- ability to work independently, systematically and orderly.
- good collaboration and communication skills.
Personal suitability will be given weightage.
Remuneration and further information
The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1017 PhD. Fellow. PhD. Fellows are normally placed in pay grade 54 (NOK 532.200,-) on the Norwegian Government salary scale upon employment and follow ordinary meriting regulations.
Employment is conducted according to national guidelines for University and Technical College PhD scholars.
